48 Hang Ngang House – Where Ho Chi Minh Wrote the Declaration of Independence

Introduction to 48 Hang Ngang

The house at 48 Hang Ngang Street is one of the most important historical sites in Hanoi. It is famously known as the place where President Ho Chi Minh wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1945.

Today, it is located in Hang Dao Ward, Hoan Kiem District.

Historical Background

Originally owned by Trinh Phuc Loi, the house was later inherited and rebuilt by Trinh Van Bo in the early 20th century.

The building has 4 floors:

  • 1st floor: Silk shop
  • Back area: Storage and exit to Hang Can Street
  • 2nd floor: Living and dining space
  • 3rd & 4th floors: Private residence

Role During the August Revolution

Before the August Revolution, the family joined the Viet Minh, turning the house into a trusted revolutionary base.

Its strategic advantages included:

  • Two entrances (Hang Ngang & Hang Can)
  • Strong structure with iron doors
  • Easy escape routes and observation points

 

Where the Declaration Was Written

Initially, Ho Chi Minh stayed on the third floor, but later moved to a small room on the second floor to work with his comrades.

The room was simple, with:

  • A round table
  • A white-covered armchair
  • A long bench

Here, he wrote the historic Declaration of Independence.

According to Hoang Thi Minh Ho, he lived and worked modestly among his colleagues.

Key Historical Decisions

At this house, Ho Chi Minh chaired important meetings and made crucial decisions:

  • Establishing the Provisional Government
  • Expanding government members
  • Preparing for independence announcement
  • Organizing a mass rally in Hanoi

On August 28, 1945, the Provisional Government list was officially announced.

The Historic Day – September 2, 1945

After completing the Declaration, Ho Chi Minh publicly read it at Ba Dinh Square before more than 500,000 people.

This marked the birth of an independent Vietnam.
